DNA testing is the only way that a person can know who their parents are if they have been searching for them or if a person has disputed being the parent. DNA testing is done by comparing materials from two people to see if they share some of the same biological information. This can be done through a saliva test, hair follicle test, or blood test. Test results usually take a few weeks to be returned due to the volume of people who request them each year. Once the test has been conducted, it is very accurate. Even when DNA testing has been done, many people will still deny that they are the parent. This is a sad situation, but it is common. While DNA testing can prove biologically who the parents are, it cannot repair relationships between children and parents. Many children have to learn to live without having a biological family and will have to find people that will be supportive in their lives. While this can be disappointing, it is something that happens.
DNA testing can be used to find missing persons, solve crimes, and determine if some people who are in prison should be there are not. The testing of DNA in many different relationships has changed the crimes are committed and solved, and also has held some parents responsible for paying child support to those who need it. DNA testing has also helped people be able to say goodbye to loved ones who were the victims of crimes and whose bodies were discovered years later.
