Indiana identity theft is a serious problem, as it is fast becoming in most states. There are several types of identity theft reported in Indiana. The most prevalent Indiana identity theft type is utilities and phone fraud. This type of identity theft makes up about one third of all Indiana identity theft occurrences. Last year 1198 phone or utilities fraud cases were reported in the state. The next most common type of Indiana identity theft is credit card fraud, which accounts for 26 percent of the state's identity theft crimes, with 948 state victims in the past year.
Bank fraud makes up 12 percent of all Indiana identity theft, with an annual 457 victims statewide. Fraud that relates to employment situations occurs in 8 percent of all Indiana identity theft cases, with 299 victims each year. The fraudulent claim of another's benefits or government funds is identity theft that affected 249 Indiana residents last year, making up 7 percent of all state identity theft. 196 Hoosiers were victims of loan fraud in Indiana in the past year. This number is five percent of all identity theft cases in the state annually. 865 other Indiana victims, or 24 percent of all identity thefts in the state, fall into various other fraud categories.
These numbers only portray those identity thefts reported and prosecuted. There are many that go unreported, primarily because the victim is either embarrassed or unaware. 242 Indiana residents last year were victims of some form of identity theft that was unsuccessful. This number indicates that of all known Indiana identity theft fraud cases or attempts to defraud, a staggering 93 percent were successful.
