You love your pets. They adore you. All around, it's a pretty terrific arrangement. Want to have pictures of them so you can keep the delightful bonds between you and your pets forever? Here are a few basic tips for getting great pictures that capture their spirits just as well as those moments when you look deep into their eyes and feel good about life in general. The best light is outside on a bright but slightly overcast day, away from heavy, noticeable shadows. Bright, direct sunlight won't give you the best results since it usually creates harsh, undesirable effects and washes out some areas. Likewise, turn off your flash unless your pet has very dark fur.
Get down on their level so the pet portrait won't be distorted or make them look up at you pathetically. After all, eye-level is when you see them best anyway. It's the same with a camera.
Think about how you visualize your pets when you picture them in your mind, then try to capture that very same expression with your photographs. A photo memory of your cutie-pie poodle should be quite different from one you'll keep forever to remember your all-wise, glamorous Himalayan cat.
Remember to keep your backgrounds as simple as possible. Try to find a solid colored background to draw attention to your pet. It's a temptation to use lots of pretty shadows and textures, but in the end, they only distract from your subject and call attention to the photographer. Now that's not what you're after, is it?
You love your pets and they love you. It's worth taking time to create the best photos of them that you can.
